A Commuter Looks Out The Window
by John Bull

Saw the poppies along the line today
(They didn’t have my paper)
Big, red garden poppies dressed in scarlet silk like Sadie,
Queen of the Kicking Horse saloon,
The big, blown belle of the West.
And tiny field poppies, spilt like blood to my mind
on pale and dusty pastures wearing sunshine like a rind.
The wheels spin, the trees swerve by,
Only the clouds are still. Pinned, glowing
High in a vast, hot, spanning sky.
